This fabric was handmade by the Hmong people of Laos. It is 100 percent cotton that has been hand woven on a 15-inch wide loom and hand dyed using the wax resist, or batik, method. The designs are drawn in wax on cotton (sometimes hemp) cloth. The cloth is then dipped in a vat of dye, removed, and allowed to dry. Over several weeks, the cloth is dipped into the dye many times until a deep shade is reached. The wax is removed and the amazing patterns are revealed. Orange and pink cotton piping were then sewn along the length of the finished fabric.
This is made from antique clothing and sari and may have signs of wear such as small, light stains or tiny holes. I do my very best to insure that each piece is as close to perfect as possible, but please remember that they came from items that have been worn and loved by one or more women. If there is something that is unacceptable to you, that I missed, I will gladly take the piece back.
I purchase saris from a single mother in Delhi, who runs her own business selling vintage and antique fabrics. She acquires these saris from women during trips to remote villages throughout India. In this way, she provides a much-needed income to these villages and to herself and her son. It's very cool being a part of this network!
